Coeliac Awareness Week

Coeliac Awareness Week

Many people have heard of the crippling effects of Coeliac disease, but few are completely sure of what it entails. Essentially, it causes problems with the digestive system such as abnormal bowel movements, nausea and pain and comes from a reaction to gluten.

The only treatment is a gluten free diet, which can be tricky as often gluten (wheat, barley, rye etc) is found in many of the things we eat and drink. So, it’s often a great pleasure when people who suffer from the illness come across something which they can have that they might normally need to avoid.

Last week was Coeliac Awareness Week which aimed to improve diagnosis, educate on the symptoms and, with a staggering half a million people in the UK currently undiagnosed, encourage people to ask themselves whether they might be affected.

We were particularly excited about the occasion as it gave us the opportunity to let Coeliac sufferers know that vodka could be a drink which they didn’t necessarily have to miss out on.

Vodka is commonly made using wheat, rye or barley, therefore it’s a drink which Coeliac sufferers would normally be unable to enjoy. However, we love everyone to enjoy cocktails or drinks made with our luxury spirits and they can because our velvety smooth D1 Potato Vodka is made using the ultimate vodka ingredient – potatoes – which means it is 100% gluten free.

If you love your vodka, here are just some of the simple, yet wonderful things you can create with it:

Vodka Martini

15ml vermouth

60ml D1 potato vodka

How to:

Pour the vermouth and vodka into a shaker and fill with ice cubes. Shake or stir well and then strain into a small Martini glass.

Garnish with a twist of lemon peel and serve.

35ml D1 potato vodka

10ml orange liqueur

45ml cranberry juice

10 ml lime juice

How to:

Pour into a cocktail shaker with a little ice, shake the ingredients together, strain into a martini glass and garnish with a wedge of lime.

Sea Breeze

50ml D1 potato vodka

50ml cranberry juice

50ml grapefruit juice

1 wedge of lime

How to:

Fill a glass with ice, mix the ingredients together, pour into the glass and garnish with lime.

If you would like to find out more about the award winning spirits that we create, you can discover them online. If the cocktail recipes have given you inspiration and the D1 potato vodka particularly takes your fancy, take a look at what you can buy for friends or even yourself as a treat.

We love the funky design, which showcases international artist Jacky Tsai’s Stained Glass Skull. The uniqueness of it also makes it a great gift for vodka lovers who will appreciate the smooth and creamy taste.
